Jump on the Spaceship

16 May

Benny Benassi’s latest single retains his signature heavy grinding baselines and crashing symbols while still managing to be an autonomous dance classic.

‘Spaceship’, the lead single from Benassi’s as yet untitled new album, solidifies his place as one of the world’s top dance producers and should easily help elevate him above his current rank as the world’s 26th best DJ (DJ Magazine, Top 100 DJ Poll, Oct. 2009). Featuring guest spots from Kelis, Black Eyed Peas’ Apl and producer Jean Baptiste, ‘Spaceship’ is Benassi’s most exciting single since his reworking of Bowie’s ‘D.J.’ and should replicate the chart success he experienced with ‘Satisfaction’.

The track lends itself well to both dancefloors and radio, with each of the featured artists delivering their own hooks rather than full verses. Kelis owns the track with her cool, robotic vocals, “sitting on top of the world/Watching the stars go by” and the repeated chant of “get high”. Apl’s verse falls somewhat flat, sounding like his best Will.I.Am impression, he adds little to track. Jean Baptiste’s lyrics keep the frenetic pace of the track though, with the chant, “jump on the spaceship/take off”.

Possibly one of the summer’s first dance anthems, ‘Spaceship’, should help Benassi give Guetta some stiff competition in the clubs over the next few months.
